KSP: How to Dock in Six Steps
Hello Computernauts! I am Andy and this is Kerbal Space Program. We have made our first orbit and safely brought a kerbal back to Kerbin. The next step in our series of tutorials is learning how to dock. Docking is an incredibly important skill to have in KSP. You will be able to build space stations, interplanetary ships with landers attached and countless other orbital monstrosities. Many people skip docking and go straight to landing on the Mun, but I think that docking is a much more important skill and learning it sooner is much better than later, like when low on gas and trying to meet up with your Duna return ship!
Today I’m going to show you how to dock in low Kerbin orbit using 6 simple steps. People think docking is incredibly hard, but the process of docking is straight forward and easy to understand. In the video, I’ll show you the method and how I dock with everything in space. There are also many docking mods that allow you to dock with even greater ease. My favorite of the docking mods is the Navyfish docking mod. I’ve included a link to it at the bottom.
Now, to the docking!
I’ve place a lander in a rough 250km x 250km inclined orbit. I have another rocket on the launch pad. Both craft files are available below. They are versions of the rocket, Orbit 1, that we flew in the first tutorial.
Here are the six steps.
1. Launch into orbit and select target.
2. Align orbital planes with selected target.
3. Burn to intercept orbit of selected target.
4. Burn to rendezvous at 5km or less with selected target.
5. Cancel relative velocity to selected target at rendezvous point.
6. Maneuver in to dock.
Try it out and let me know what you think of this pretty standard method of docking!
